Spanish company Escribano Mechanical & Engineering has proposed two options for the Spanish Navy to equip its ships with Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) point defense systems that they lack. We remind you that in 2019 we only reported on the developments of this company in this area, with the focus on the so-called Sentinel TAO. However, the company now offers two different solutions to meet its air defense and missile defense needs.
The novelty is the Sentinel 25 RGF (Rapid Gun Fire), a CIWS system that integrates a 25mm GAU-12 / U rotary cannon. and 5 tubes that will integrate the new version of this weapon, the GAU-22 / A, also 25 mm in the future. and 4 tubes. This weapon equips the station with a high rate of fire and saturation power to shoot down targets. It has an integrated electro-optical system with thermal imaging camera, day camera and laser telometer and can be integrated into an IRST (Infrared Search and Track) system based on the electro-optical OTEOS system, but with a greater range and speed for automatic detection and monitoring. Missile development, which Escribano is also currently working on. This system, based on the Sentinel 30 (chosen by the Spanish Navy to modernize the Serviola class patrol boats), will bring community to the assemblies of the Navy.
The other option is well known and based on the Sentinel TAO mentioned above, which in addition to this type of 25mm rotary weapon can incorporate a launcher with two to four short-range missiles to ensure speed of response and accuracy. The platform has a weight of 1,200 kg. (excluding weapons or ammunition), has double stabilization in height and orientation, with a 360-degree view and an elevation of -20 to +60 degrees. The OTEOS sensor has a cooled thermal imaging camera that can detect targets at a distance of more than 12 km and detect them at a distance of 5.7 km. and identify them at 3.8 km. according to NATO classification. The high-resolution CCD daytime camera can detect targets 12 km away and recognize them 5 km away. and identify them at 2.5 km. The sensor also has an eye-safe laser telometer with an accuracy of 1 meter at 6.4 km. and a maximum range of 8 km.
The TAO system has two weapons such as the GAU-12U multi-barrel cannon with five 25mm barrels. that uses 25x137mm ammunition. This can be of the High Explosive Incendiary (HEI) type. It uses electric propulsion and has a maximum range of 3.8 km., A weight of 123 kg. and a cadence of 1,800 or 4,200 rounds per minute, with projectiles leaving the barrel at 1,040 m / s. It also features a short-range surface-to-air missile with fire and forgetfulness guidance and infrared guidance with passive direct guidance and proportional navigation. It has an effective range of 6 km. and a maximum of 8 km. It has a warhead with three detonation modes (impact, proximity and self-destruct after 12.5 seconds). It has a weight of 22 kg and a diameter of 90 mm. and a length of 1.86 with a top speed of 800 m / s.
A national proposal with high commonality
Both solutions offer an alternative for the Navy to equip their ships with point defenses, the first of which is a short-term and very economical solution to asymmetric surface threats and the second, missile defense, the most suitable solution. due to its superior range and precision, but especially with a higher response speed.
Both systems represent a stand-alone solution and may or may not be integrated into the ship’s combat system to detect and monitor threats. Both systems are manufactured nationally and serviced on site in order to guarantee the life cycle of the systems. Solutions that may be of interest to the Navy on ships that lack this protection, including the Navy BAMs or the Juan Carlos I LHD, to provide close protection to others for this ship that is normally escorted and that Escribano is currently developing offer customers.
Escribano, together with MBDA and Navantia, proposes a national industrial cooperation project to develop an autonomous system with a launch of four Mistral missiles, equipped with its own direction of fire for the detection and automatic determination of targets, that is, with stand-alone Surgery. alone, in addition to its integration into the combat systems of ships. Let’s finally remember that in addition to the recent 2019 Sentinel 30 selection, Escribano was selected by the Navy to modernize their main surface vessels by equipping them with their lightweight RWS Sentinel 2.0.
