The United States Navy submarines are equipped with “air periscopes”.

The United States Navy or US Navy is completing the program to purchase 120 unmanned aerial systems or unmanned aerial systems (UAS) that specialize in operating from their submarines as “aerial periscopes” specializing in these aerospace systems.

The US Navy anticipates that the call for proposals to purchase these UAS, which are specifically the Blackwing 10C model, will be completed in May 2023 and that the first of these UAS will arrive in August of that year . The Blackwing 10C system is very small, with a wingspan of 68.6 centimeters and a weight of 1.81 kilograms, but provides high-speed data and communication relays for submarines and surface units through a system. Integrated digital data connection, high security against attempts to intercept or disturb them.

As a payment card, it is equipped with a miniaturized electro-optical and infrared sensor that provides information, surveillance and reconnaissance or intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). A capacity that makes it possible to react quickly to the submarine’s crew when threats such as the presence of sea mines arise.

The Blackwing 10C is started in two steps. In the initial phase, a container / canister is started with the UAG. It is ejected from the submerged submarine first and once it reaches the surface of the sea, the container opens and launches the tiny plane into the air to begin its mission.

This launch capacity was demonstrated for the first time in 2013 and further tests have been carried out since then. The image of the news is consistent with the image taken near the Hawaiian Archipelago from the submarine or submarine with ballistic missile launchers in October 2020 – Launched Ohio-class Ballistic Missile (SLBM), USS Henry M. Jackson. (SSBN-730).

US Navy Rear Admiral Dave Goggins, Executive Officer for Submarine Programs, said the Blackwing received the Initial Operational Capability (IOC) award last September after a series of demonstrations in 2019 and 2020.

The UAV, which is officially acquired under the official name of the Submarine Launched Unmanned Aerial Systems Program (SLUAS) or the Unmanned Aerial Systems Program (SLUAS), has already been “developed, tested and demonstrated successful integration with the remaining components.” SLUAS subsystems, “added a US Navy spokesman (Julio Maíz Sanz).
