The Spanish Navy patrol boat? Meteoro? has conducted a joint patrol exercise with the Royal Moroccan Navy ship “Raïs Al Mounastiri” in the strategic and busy Strait of Gibraltar.
Of the ?? Meteor ?? is currently conducting a surveillance mission in support of NATO’s Sea Guardian operation against Islamic terrorism in the Mediterranean, launched in 2016 as a sequel to Active Endeavor, which was activated after the September 11, 2001 massacres in the United States.
The participation of Spain in this operation, for which the provided resources (naval and air units) fall under the Operations Command (MOPS), is important. The last activation is that of the ?? Meteoro ?? (P-41), the first of the Maritime Action Vessels (BAM) to give a name to ships in its class, designed by Navantia in Spain.
During this Meteoro mission, which began in early February, the ship made a stopover in the port of Tangier, where the BAM’s commandant (Lieutenant Commander Álvaro Muñoz-Delgado Ramírez) received me on board the Chief of the Marine Royale who was in command of the operations the Fifth Naval Base. Both discussed strengthening cooperation to combat illegal immigration and maritime crime in the Mediterranean, as well as the role that the Moroccan Navy Royale could play in this process together with the NATO fleet.
The visit between February 15 and 17 ended with a transit exercise between the Spanish ship and the aforementioned “Raïs Al Mounastiri” (P-322), an OP-64 Naval Industries patrol ship built by Lorient in France (today in Naval Group integrated) along with four other ships? Brothers? The “Raïs Al Mounastiri” was delivered between 1995 and 1997 and was the last to join the Marine Royale, particularly on December 17, 1999.
The Kingdom of Morocco has a clear focus on rapprochement with the West, which is why its cooperation with NATO is permanent, which also helps to train Marine Royale specialists in the most modern techniques of air-sea warfare. (Julio Maíz Sanz)
