Israel’s defense industry lands in the United Arab Emirates for the first time

Following the formalization of diplomatic relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates last summer, the IDEX international defense exhibition held in Abu Dhabi from February 21-25 this year will be highlighted by the arrival of a large number of Israeli defense companies.

Let us remember that on August 13th, the United Arab Emirates-Israel peace agreement was published through the United States to establish diplomatic relations and unlock the region’s potential. The historic agreement meant that the Emirates became the third Arab country after Egypt (1979) and Jordan (1994) to normalize diplomatic relations with Israel, which in turn (temporarily) included the partial annexation of the West Bank and the settlements in this region picked up …

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu then announced the arrival of a new era between Israel and the Arab world, which, among other things, will make it possible to open up new markets for Israel’s powerful defense industry. Perhaps the normalization of relations with Israel and access to advanced weapons from the US and Israel will play a role on the roadmap in the countries of the Gulf region in the coming years.

It is enough to compare the exhibitor list of IDEX 2021 with that of the last edition, in which there was no Israeli company. This year, up to 55 Israeli companies have registered, including specialist publications, trade fairs and the large companies of this country, such as Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), Elbit Systems, IWI, Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, Israel Shipyards, Plasan or companies. Industrial companies such as SK Group or Avnon. These companies hope to provide all kinds of products, services and equipment to the armed forces and security of the Emirates to open a lucrative market. (Jos M Navarro Garca)
