Héroux-Devtek Spain (HDS) coordinates the NNEOS project? Gondola hood NExt Generation Opening System? Funded by the European Commission as part of the Clean Sky 2 program for innovation research projects in the field of “Advanced configurations of aircraft power plants”. The project started in October 2019 and is expected to run for 3 years.
The main objective of the project is to develop and validate a system for opening the engine nacelle doors based on electromechanical actuation, which allows full access to the engines and nacelle components to facilitate maintenance of the entire system. The solution proposed by NNEOS will be compact, safe, reliable and easy to use. In addition, it has to withstand the very high temperatures that are reached in this area both during flight and on the ground during maintenance work.
The NNEOS project is divided into 8 work packages, which range from the definition of the requirements to the conceptual and detailed planning, manufacture and assembly of the first prototypes to functional tests and the validation of the equipment. The planned tests include vibration, partial duration, and operating and survival temperatures.
The company is carrying out this project to meet Airbus’ requirements for the development of the actuation system. During the first year, HDS worked on the analysis and definition of requirements and the development of the first concept design. The main difficulty was that the system components had to withstand extremely high temperatures of up to 250 ° C over a long period of time and work at them.
After the delays caused by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company will continue to work with Airbus over the coming months to meet the following project milestones. In the next year 2021 the PDR will take place in January and the CDR in June.
