The European multinational missile company MBDA and the emirate company Tawazun have announced an agreement to develop the air-to-surface precision bomb SmartGlider in the United Arab Emirates. Therefore, a long-term partnership between the two companies has been proposed so that the development of the SmartGlider system can take place from design to production in the Emirates. A group of engineers, mostly made up of emirate staff, will be responsible for development and work at the first MBDA Regional Missile Engineering Center in the United Arab Emirates. This agreement is part of another bilateral intergovernmental agreement signed between France and the United Arab Emirates.
MBDA has introduced a family of guided ground attack weapons called SmartGlider, which are optimized to counter anti-access strategies and other threats on emerging battlefields that will be deployed in combat aircraft by 2025 at the latest.
It has folding wings and can glide with a range of 100 km. The main targets are short- and medium-term surface-to-air threats, as well as moving or relocatable or hard-hitting fixed targets. Each light pump measures 2m. Long and 120kg in weight, so an aircraft can carry 12-18 thanks to the HSL (Hexabomb Smart Launcher) intelligent launcher that can manage the take-off without adding to the pilot’s workload, and from the first Moment to saturate and destroy enemy air defenses.
In general, it can be used against a wide range of targets, from strong or well-defended fixed points like hangars and other actionable ones that can only be destroyed at a distance with significant lethal effects. In addition to Light, MBDA is preparing a 1,300 kg SmartGlider Heavy. with a multi-purpose warhead of more than 1,000 kg. against overwhelming infrastructures. (Jos M Navarro Garca)
